Nourishing and Flourishing: An Exhibit of Appalachian Art and Food

September 22, 2023 @ 8:00 am - January 5, 2024 @ 5:00 pm

This exhibit is an exciting collaboration between EAT/ART space, the pop-up gallery from a dining room in Johnson City, TN, and Create Appalachia, a non-profit dedicated to supporting professional development in the arts.
We’re exploring the intersection between artists, food, and our Appalachian culture that we both steward and generate through our creative work in the fine and culinary arts.
The opening reception will be a part of Create Appalachia’s Arts@Work Summit, which will have some out-of-town speakers and other panelists and events happening in the Kingsport Center for Art and Technology where the exhibit is taking place.

“Nourishing and Flourishing: Appalachian Art and Food”

Appalachia, a multifaceted area both historically and culturally rich, is often overlooked within the broader artistic discourse. Its contemporary culture seems invisible to those outside of it. “Nourishing and Flourishing” is an expression of this contemporary strength and uniqueness through our shared foods, our shared artistic mediums, and our shared creative endeavors.

Within this exhibit, you’ll see how artists celebrate and participate in their unique Appalachian food culture. You’ll see how the term “artist” extends beyond the visual and into food and other mediums. You’ll see how artists create nurturing environments through food and artistic expression. Appalachia abounds with creativity.

“Nourishing and Flourishing” beckons you to experience the connections that exist between our sustenance, our visual expressions, and our Appalachian identity.
